AI for psychologists
Psychologists get the most from AI on writing: structuring assessment reports, drafting notes in HIPAA-compliant tools, summarising research and preparing teaching. The cautions are specific to the field: never paste protected test items or client data into a general chatbot, and never let AI interpret scores or reach a diagnosis.
Psychologists write a lot. An evaluation can mean hours of report writing after the testing is done, and clinicians in practice, research and teaching all carry heavy documentation loads. AI is a good structural editor and drafter for that work, provided the clinical reasoning and interpretation are yours.
The profession has extra constraints that a generic AI guide misses. Test materials are copyrighted and must be kept secure. Assessment data is identifiable and sensitive. Forensic and school reports carry legal weight. And some states now regulate how licensed mental health professionals can use AI with clients. Use AI where it saves writing time, inside those lines.
7 ways psychologists use AI
Structure and edit assessment reports
Write your interpretation in rough notes, then use a HIPAA-compliant AI tool to organise it into your report template, tighten the language and catch inconsistencies between sections. Ask it to flag any recommendation that isn't supported by a finding in the report. Keep scoring in the publisher's own platform.
Write parent and client feedback summaries
A 20-page report rarely gets read in full by the family. AI can draft a two-page plain-language summary of findings and recommendations for parents, teachers or clients. Check that it doesn't soften a diagnosis or turn a tentative finding into a firm one.
Draft progress notes
Mental health note tools such as Upheal, Blueprint and Mentalyc draft notes from a session recording or your summary. Get written consent for any recording, and review every note before signing.
Summarise and search the literature
Use AI to find studies, summarise methods and effect sizes, and compare findings across papers for a lit review or grant. Check every citation and number against the original: models invent plausible-looking references, and an invented reference in a manuscript or report is a serious problem.
Help with research code and analysis
AI is a capable assistant for writing R or Python analysis scripts, explaining a statistical method or debugging code. Run analyses yourself, check the output makes sense and never upload identifiable research data to a tool your IRB hasn't approved.
Prepare lectures, supervision and training
Turn lecture notes into slides, write case vignettes (fictional, never based on identifiable clients) for teaching, and draft exam questions. Supervisors can use AI to build structured feedback templates for trainees.
Listen to reading while you're away from the desk
Text-to-speech tools turn papers and long documents into audio. It's an easy way to get through journal reading. Use them only with published material, not client files.

A prompt to start with: write a family-friendly feedback summary
Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT and fill in the gold parts.
You are a psychologist writing a plain-language summary of an evaluation for a family. Use only the information below. Do not add findings, diagnoses or recommendations that are not listed.
Reason for referral: [REASON]
Age and grade (no name): [AGE, GRADE]
Key findings in plain terms: [FINDINGS]
Diagnosis or conclusion, if any: [CONCLUSION]
Recommendations: [LIST]
Write a two-page summary at an [8TH GRADE] reading level with headings: Why we did this evaluation, What we found, What it means, What we recommend at home, What we recommend at school. Start with the child's strengths. Avoid jargon; where a term is needed, explain it. Keep the tone warm and honest.Where psychologists shouldn't trust AI
- Test security is an ethical obligation. Don't paste protected test items, stimuli, manuals or normative tables into general AI tools, and don't ask them to reproduce copyrighted test content.
- AI must not interpret test results or make diagnoses. Score with validated publisher software and do the interpretation yourself; a chatbot will produce confident, wrong interpretations of scores.
- Client data only goes into tools covered by a HIPAA business associate agreement. Research data needs IRB approval for any tool you use.
- Get informed, written consent before AI records or transcribes sessions or testing. Some states, such as Illinois, set specific consent and use rules for AI in mental health services.
- Reports used in court, schools or disability decisions carry legal weight. AI-generated errors or invented citations can harm clients and expose you to board complaints.
Will AI replace psychologists?
Psychologists score 30% on the Obsolescence Index (Safe… For Now). The first tasks to go: writing session notes and reports, and scoring standardized assessments.
Questions the Humans Keep Asking
What are the best AI tools for psychologists?
The Overlord's stack for psychologists: Claude (feedback summaries, literature digests and analysis code, with no client data); Perplexity (finding studies with sources); Gamma (lectures and training decks); Notion (teaching materials, supervision templates and research notes); Speechify (listening to published papers). Specialist options include Q-global (Pearson), Upheal, Blueprint, Mentalyc.
Can psychologists use AI to write reports?
Yes, as a drafting and editing aid inside a HIPAA-compliant tool, with your own interpretation as the input. The clinical reasoning, scoring and conclusions must be yours, and protected test content must never go into a general chatbot.
What AI tools are HIPAA compliant for psychologists?
Purpose-built mental health tools such as Upheal, Blueprint and Mentalyc offer BAAs, as do some enterprise plans of general AI models. Check that a BAA is actually signed and read the vendor's data retention and training terms.
Is it okay to use ChatGPT for psychology research?
For brainstorming, coding help and summarising published papers, yes, with careful checking. Verify every reference and number, disclose AI use as your target journal requires, and keep identifiable research data out unless your IRB has approved the tool.
