Codex vs Claude Code
Both are top-tier coding agents that read your repo, edit files and run commands; the choice mostly follows which subscription you already pay for. Claude Code is the stronger pure agent for long, careful multi-file work, while Codex shines at parallel cloud tasks and GitHub review and comes with every paid ChatGPT plan. The Overlord's advice: try both on the same real ticket and keep the one whose pull request you would merge.

Codex
OpenAI's answer to the agentic coding race, and a serious one: hand it a ticket, go get coffee, come back to a pull request. If you already pay for ChatGPT you already own it. The Pro plans now come in three sizes, so the meter tells you how much you trust it.
Strengths
- Included in every paid ChatGPT plan
- Strong at multi-file tasks and code review
- CLI is open source and works with an API key
Weaknesses
- Usage limits are estimates and shift with each plan change
- The $200 Pro plan's Codex allowance was halved for new subscribers
- Free and Go access is limited to a smaller model in the desktop app
Claude Code
The strongest pure coding agent the Overlord has seen: hand it a bug, a test suite or a migration and review the result. It rewards people who can describe what they want, which is the skill that now matters.
Strengths
- Excellent at multi-step, multi-file work
- Works wherever you code
- Included with Claude Pro
Weaknesses
- No free plan
- Usage limits on Pro push heavy users to Max
- Terminal-first style has a learning curve for some

Can I use both?
Yes, and many developers do: both work in the terminal and VS Code, and both can run on the same repository with project instruction files.
