Claude Pro vs Max 5x

The short answer

Stay on Pro ($20/mo, or $17 billed annually) unless you keep hitting the five-hour usage limit. Max 5x ($100/mo) gives five times Pro's usage and Max 20x ($200/mo) twenty times, which mostly matters for people running Claude Code for hours a day. Max also includes Fable models and monthly API credits that Pro doesn't.

Signs it's time to upgrade

  • You hit the five-hour limit on most working days.
  • Long Claude Code sessions stop partway because you ran out of usage.
  • You're spending more than about $80 a month on extra usage credits on top of Pro.
  • You want Fable models without paying per use.

The fine print

Max API credits (added October 2026) can't be used for interactive Claude Code. Fable models need paid usage credits on Pro and standard Team seats. API access is billed separately per million tokens, and Enterprise adds usage-based charges on top of the seat price.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking

How much more usage does Claude Max give than Pro?

Max 5x gives five times Pro's usage per five-hour session and Max 20x gives twenty times. Both still have a weekly limit across all models.

Is Claude Max worth it for Claude Code?

If you use Claude Code for several hours a day, yes: it is the main reason people upgrade. If you code with it occasionally, Pro plus the odd usage credit is cheaper.

Can I pay for Claude Max annually?

No. Max is billed monthly. Only Pro has an annual option ($200 a year).
