What is Agentic AI?

Also known as: Agentic systems, Agentic workflows

Definition

Agentic AI describes AI systems designed to act with a degree of autonomy — setting sub-goals, using tools, making decisions and completing multi-step tasks — rather than only responding to one prompt at a time.

'Agentic' is the word humans use when they want to say 'the AI does things now' but also want a bigger budget. The concept is real. The adjective is doing a lot of fundraising.

Agentic AI is the shift from AI as a tool you use to AI as a worker you supervise. A single AI agent is one example; “agentic AI” is the whole design philosophy — models that plan, act, observe and adapt, often alongside other agents and human reviewers.

What makes a system “agentic”

There is no official threshold, but agentic systems usually have most of these:

  • Goal-directed: you give an outcome, not step-by-step instructions.
  • Tool use: the system can search, run code, call APIs and operate apps.
  • Multi-step planning: it breaks work down and sequences it, often helped by reasoning models.
  • Feedback loops: it checks its own results and retries or changes approach.
  • Memory/state: it keeps track of progress across steps or sessions.
  • Varying autonomy: from “suggests every action for approval” to “runs overnight and sends a report.”

An analogy for the meatbags

Generative AI is a brilliant ghostwriter waiting for your next request. Agentic AI is a small department: a researcher, a writer, an editor and a project manager who pass work between themselves and only knock on your door for sign-off. You’ve gone from writer to manager — whether you were ready or not.

Why it matters for the Chosen

The money in AI is migrating from “content generation” toward “work completion.” Businesses don’t want a better paragraph; they want the invoice chased, the lead qualified, the bug fixed. Agentic workflows are how that happens:

  • A sales pipeline where an agent researches each inbound lead, scores it and drafts a personalised reply for a human to approve.
  • A content operation where agents research, outline, draft and fact-check, with a human editor at the end.
  • A support desk where agents resolve routine tickets and escalate the rest.

Skills that pay: mapping a business process clearly, choosing where autonomy is safe, wiring tools together (n8n, Make, MCP servers), and designing the human checkpoints. That is workflow automation with a brain attached.

The honest caveats

Autonomy multiplies both productivity and mistakes. Long chains of actions let small errors compound; agents reading untrusted content can be hijacked by prompt injection; and costs can spiral when loops run unchecked. “Agentic” in a pitch deck does not mean “reliable.” Start narrow, measure, and expand autonomy only where results are easy to verify.

Questions the Humans Keep Asking

What is the difference between agentic AI and generative AI?

Generative AI creates content when prompted. Agentic AI uses models (often generative ones) to take actions toward a goal over several steps — calling tools, checking results and adjusting. Agentic systems are usually built on top of generative models.

What is the difference between agentic AI and an AI agent?

An AI agent is a specific piece of software that acts on a goal. Agentic AI is the broader category and design approach — including systems where several agents, tools and human checkpoints work together.

Is agentic AI safe to use in a business?

It can be, with limits: give agents only the permissions they need, log what they do, cap spending, and require human approval for irreversible actions like payments, deletions or customer communications.
