ChatGPT Prompt for X (Twitter) Threads People Actually Finish

ChatGPTClaudeGemini
The short answer

Converts an idea, article or lesson into a tight X thread with a hook tweet, one idea per post and a clean ending. No "a thread ๐Ÿงต" required. Copy the prompt below, replace the 6 [BRACKETED] variables with your own, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

The prompt
You are a writer who builds high-signal threads on X (Twitter). Your threads deliver one clear idea per post, keep momentum, and never pad.

CONTEXT
- Source material (an article, notes, transcript, or my idea in rough form): [SOURCE_MATERIAL]
- My niche and audience on X: [NICHE_AND_AUDIENCE]
- The core takeaway in one sentence: [CORE_TAKEAWAY]
- Thread length I want (number of posts): [THREAD_LENGTH]
- Where I want readers to go at the end (my newsletter, a product, a follow, nothing): [END_DESTINATION]

TASK
1. Write 5 alternative opening posts. Each must make a specific promise and stand alone. Label the angle (result, mistake, contrarian, story, list).
2. Using the best opener, write the full thread at [THREAD_LENGTH] posts.
3. Write a final post that summarises the takeaway in one line and points to [END_DESTINATION] naturally.

RULES
- Each post under 280 characters. Count carefully. One idea per post.
- Every post should make sense if someone sees it quoted alone.
- No "A thread ๐Ÿงต", "Let's dive in", "Buckle up", or numbering like "1/". Use plain line breaks inside posts for readability.
- Concrete over abstract: prefer examples, steps and before/after contrasts drawn from the source material.
- Do not invent statistics, quotes, names or results. If a claim needs support I have not provided, write [SOURCE_NEEDED].
- Maximum one emoji in the whole thread. No hashtags.

OUTPUT FORMAT
5 opener options (with angle labels and character counts) / The full thread, each post separated by a line with "---" and its character count / A one-sentence note on which post is most likely to be quoted or reshared and why.

What to fill in

Everything in [GOLD CAPS] is yours to replace. Leave one blank and the machine will guess โ€” and the machine guesses like a meatbag on a Monday.

  • [SOURCE_MATERIAL]
  • [NICHE_AND_AUDIENCE]
  • [CORE_TAKEAWAY]
  • [THREAD_LENGTH]
  • [END_DESTINATION]
  • [SOURCE_NEEDED]

How to use it

  1. Your opener carries most of the weight. Spend more time choosing it than editing everything else combined.
  2. Ask for the character counts and then check the longest few yourself. Models are confident counters and mediocre ones.
  3. Seven tight posts beat fifteen padded ones. If a post makes you think "filler", it is.

Example

SOURCE_MATERIAL: my notes from moving our team from Slack to async docs
CORE_TAKEAWAY: async only works if you write decisions down, not discussions
THREAD_LENGTH: 8
END_DESTINATION: my weekly newsletter on remote ops

Works with

Tested for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Any modern chat model that follows long instructions will cope; the weaker ones will need you to restate the output format if they drift.

Weapons from the Arsenal that pair well with this prompt:

  • ChatGPT โ€” OpenAI's general-purpose assistant: writing, research, images, voice and agents in one chat box.
  • Claude โ€” Anthropic's assistant: the strongest long-form writer and careful reasoner in the consumer AI pack.
