OpenClaw Hosting: VPS vs Mac Mini vs Managed (2026)
Most people should run OpenClaw on a small VPS: about $6–12 a month gets you a server that's on 24/7, and the model API is the bigger cost anyway. Pick Hostinger's managed OpenClaw if you don't want to touch a terminal, DigitalOcean's hardened 1-Click if you want a secure default, and a Mac mini only for iMessage or local models.

An agent that stops when your laptop lid closes misses every message that arrives overnight. To keep OpenClaw answering around the clock, it needs a machine that’s always on, and that starts at $6 a month for a small DigitalOcean server.
Here are the options, what each costs, and which one fits you.
The options at a glance
| Option | Cost per month | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small VPS (DigitalOcean, Hostinger, Hetzner and others) | DigitalOcean $6 (1 GB) to $24 (4 GB); Hostinger KVM 1 $6.49 intro, $11.99 renewal | Most people using cloud models | You run updates and security yourself |
| Hostinger managed OpenClaw | $5.99 (24-month term), $7.99 (12 months), $10.99 (monthly); renews at $11.99 | Non-technical users | No published specs or AI-credit amounts |
| DigitalOcean OpenClaw 1-Click | Runs on a $12–24 Droplet (DigitalOcean’s posts differ) | A secure default without hand-hardening | Costs more than a bare $6 server |
| Mac mini at home | Hardware up front, plus power | iMessage, local models | Your home internet and power become uptime |

Option 1: a small VPS
OpenClaw itself is light: its official DigitalOcean guide uses 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM with 2 GB of swap, and says to use API models because local ones won’t fit (OpenClaw docs). Third-party guides suggest 2 vCPU and 4 GB for comfortable personal use and 4 vCPU / 8 GB if the agent drives a browser.
| Provider | Plan | Specs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | Basic | 1 vCPU, 1 GB | $6/mo, billed per second |
| DigitalOcean | Basic | 2 vCPU, 4 GB | $24/mo |
| Hostinger | KVM 1 | 1 vCPU, 4 GB | $6.49/mo intro, $11.99 renewal (paid upfront for the term) |
| Hostinger | KVM 2 | 2 vCPU, 8 GB | $8.99/mo intro, $14.99 renewal |
Hostinger gives the most RAM per dollar if you prepay a long term; DigitalOcean has no intro-versus-renewal gap and bills by the second. OpenClaw’s docs also list Hetzner, Fly.io, GCP, Azure, Oracle’s free tier, Railway, Render and AWS (OpenClaw VPS docs).
Follow our OpenClaw setup guide to install it and run it as a service.
Option 2: Hostinger’s managed OpenClaw
Hostinger sells OpenClaw as a managed app: it handles setup and security, includes some AI credits, and lets you switch to Hermes Agent, n8n or Paperclip at no extra charge (the switch resets setup). It’s $5.99 a month on a 24-month term and renews at $11.99 (Hostinger). The page doesn’t publish the server specs or how many AI credits you get, so ask before relying on it for heavy use.
Option 3: DigitalOcean’s hardened 1-Click
DigitalOcean’s OpenClaw image comes locked down: HTTPS through Caddy, a gateway key with device pairing, agents isolated in Docker, fail2ban and automatic security updates (DigitalOcean). Its January 2026 post said it needed at least the $24 Droplet; a later post says a February 2026 update made it run on the $12 tier. Start at $12 and resize if it runs out of memory.
Option 4: a Mac mini
Base Mac minis sold out in early 2026 as people bought them to run OpenClaw. You don’t need one. A Mac is worth it only if you want iMessage (a Mac can act as a node) or want to run local models, which need roughly 16–24 GB of RAM. Otherwise a $6–12 VPS does the same job without your home connection and power becoming the weak point.
Security applies everywhere
Wherever it runs, keep the gateway off the open internet (SSH tunnel or Tailscale), keep OpenClaw updated (CVE-2026-25253 was fixed in 2026.1.29), and read every skill before installing it. Researchers counted tens of thousands of OpenClaw instances exposed online in early 2026. See the security steps in our setup guide.

Questions people ask
What's the best VPS for OpenClaw?
Any reputable VPS with at least 1 GB of RAM plus swap works with cloud models; third-party guides suggest 2 vCPU and 4 GB for comfortable personal use. Hostinger is cheapest on a long upfront term; DigitalOcean has flat prices and a hardened OpenClaw image.
Do I need a Mac mini for OpenClaw?
No. OpenClaw's docs list a dozen VPS and cloud options and use a 1 GB server in their own guide. A Mac only matters for iMessage or for running local models, which need 16 GB of RAM or more.
How much does OpenClaw hosting cost?
About $6–12 a month for a small VPS (DigitalOcean $6 for 1 GB; Hostinger KVM 1 at $6.49 intro), or from $5.99 a month for Hostinger's managed OpenClaw on a 24-month term. Model API usage is extra.
Does Hostinger have OpenClaw hosting?
Yes. Hostinger sells a managed OpenClaw app at $5.99 a month on a 24-month term, $7.99 on 12 months or $10.99 monthly, renewing at $11.99, with some AI credits included. Its page doesn't publish the server specs or credit amounts.
