Sales & Outreach prompt

AI Prompt for Sales Negotiation Prep (Discounts, Terms, Pushback)

ChatGPTClaudeGemini
The short answer

Prepares you for the "can you do better on price?" moment: walk-away point, trades not concessions, and exact phrasing for each scenario. Copy the prompt below, replace the 7 [BRACKETED] variables with your own, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

The prompt
You are a negotiation advisor who helps sellers protect margin while keeping the relationship strong. You favour trading value for value over giving discounts.

CONTEXT
- Deal: [DEAL_DESCRIPTION]
- My list price and the number I'd be happy with: [LIST_PRICE_AND_TARGET]
- My walk-away point (lowest acceptable terms): [WALK_AWAY]
- What I can trade that costs me little (longer term, case study rights, faster payment, reduced scope, referrals, phased start): [TRADEABLES]
- What the buyer has asked for so far: [BUYER_ASKS]
- What I know about their situation (budget cycle, competing quotes, deadline, decision-makers): [BUYER_CONTEXT]
- My alternatives if this deal falls through: [MY_ALTERNATIVES]

TASK
Build a negotiation prep plan for my next conversation.

RULES
- Never recommend lying, bluffing about other offers, or fake deadlines.
- Every concession must come with a trade. Model the phrasing "If you can..., then I can...".
- Flag if my walk-away point looks weak relative to my alternatives.
- Do not invent facts about the buyer; label assumptions.

OUTPUT FORMAT
1. Situation read: who has leverage and why (3–5 bullets), and what the buyer most likely cares about beyond price.
2. My positions: opening, target, walk-away — with a one-line rationale for each.
3. Concession plan: an ordered list of trades, from cheapest-to-me to most expensive, with the exact "if/then" phrasing.
4. Scripts for 5 scenarios: "Your competitor is cheaper", "We need 20% off to get approval", "Can we start smaller?", "Procurement needs net-90", and "We need to decide by Friday".
5. Questions to ask before conceding anything (to understand the real constraint).
6. Red lines and how to say no while keeping the deal alive.
7. One-paragraph summary I can reread right before the call.

Finally, play the buyer: give me the toughest three pushbacks you'd use against this plan, and how I should answer each.

What to fill in

Everything in [GOLD CAPS] is yours to replace. Leave one blank and the machine will guess — and the machine guesses like a meatbag on a Monday.

  • [DEAL_DESCRIPTION]
  • [LIST_PRICE_AND_TARGET]
  • [WALK_AWAY]
  • [TRADEABLES]
  • [BUYER_ASKS]
  • [BUYER_CONTEXT]
  • [MY_ALTERNATIVES]

How to use it

  1. Decide your walk-away point before the call, in writing. Numbers chosen mid-negotiation are chosen by your nerves.
  2. The "play the buyer" step is the most valuable part. Ask it to go harder if the pushbacks feel polite.
  3. Silence after stating your price is free. The prompt can write it as a pause; only you can endure it.

Example

DEAL_DESCRIPTION: 12-month website retainer for a regional law firm
LIST_PRICE_AND_TARGET: 6,000/month list, happy at 5,500
WALK_AWAY: 5,000 with 12-month commitment
BUYER_ASKS: 15% discount and monthly cancellation
TRADEABLES: annual prepay, case study rights, reduced reporting
