AI receptionist for law firms
An AI receptionist can answer every call, run a first intake, book consultations and capture leads that would otherwise call the next firm. Lawyers carry extra duties: confidentiality, supervision and no legal advice, as ABA Formal Opinion 512 sets out for generative AI. Pick a tool that integrates with your practice software and keep intake questions factual.

Prospective clients often call several firms and hire the first one that responds. An AI receptionist answers at any hour, gathers the facts of the matter, checks it fits your practice areas and books a consultation.
Lawyers can use it, but the ethics rules still apply. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) applies existing duties of competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision and reasonable fees to generative AI tools. It's advisory; your state bar's rules control.
The calls it should handle, and how
| Call | What the AI should do |
|---|---|
| New potential client | Collect name, contact details, practice area, a short factual summary and the other party's name for a conflict check; book a consultation. |
| Existing client wants their lawyer | Take a message or transfer; never discuss the case. |
| Court, opposing counsel or another firm | Route straight to staff. |
| Fees and consultation questions | Answer from approved text (consultation fee, practice areas, office hours). |
| After-hours urgent matter (arrest, deadline) | Follow your urgent-matter script: on-call number or immediate alert. |
What to look for
- Practice-software integration. Intake records and bookings should land in your case-management system. Upfirst, for example, integrates with Clio Manage for scheduling.
- A clear no-advice script. The AI should say it can't give legal advice and stick to facts and scheduling.
- Confidentiality terms. Read the vendor's data retention, training and security terms; Opinion 512 says you may need informed client consent before putting confidential information into some AI tools.
- Conflict-check data. Capture the names of all parties so staff can run conflicts before a consultation.

FAQ
Can a law firm use an AI receptionist ethically?
Yes, with supervision. ABA Formal Opinion 512 says lawyers must understand the tool, protect client confidentiality (sometimes with informed consent), supervise its use and bill fairly. Keep the AI to intake and scheduling, and check your state bar's rules.
Does it integrate with Clio?
Some do: Upfirst lists Clio Manage for scheduling. Others connect through Zapier or an API. Confirm the exact integration before you buy.
AI receptionist or a human answering service for a law firm?
Human services such as Ruby start at $250 a month for 50 minutes and handle sensitive callers well. AI receptionists cost less per call and never miss one. Many firms use AI for after-hours and overflow and people for business hours.
