Missed Call Text Back: How It Works and the Best Tools
Missed call text back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you don't answer, so the conversation continues by SMS instead of dying at voicemail. It's built into GoHighLevel, Jobber's AI Receptionist and most AI receptionist tools, from about $25 a month. Register for A2P 10DLC first, and keep the text a reply, not a promotion.

If a customer calls and you don’t pick up, they rarely leave a message. In Invoca’s call data for home-services businesses, 27% of calls went unanswered and under 3% of callers sent to voicemail left a message (Invoca, a call-tracking vendor).
Missed call text back goes after the other 97%: a text arrives seconds after the missed call, and the customer can just reply. Below: how it works, which tools include it, what it costs, and the texting rules to follow before you switch it on.
How it works
- A call to your business number isn’t answered (or the caller hangs up).
- The system sends an automatic text from the same number, for example: “Hi, this is Mike’s Plumbing. Sorry we missed your call. How can we help? Reply here and we’ll get right back to you.”
- The reply lands in your inbox or app, or an AI assistant answers it, books the job and alerts you.
Tools that include it
| Tool | How it does it | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoHighLevel | Business Profile toggle or “Missed Call Text Back” workflow recipe | Plans from $97/mo, plus phone and SMS usage | GoHighLevel |
| Jobber AI Receptionist | Texts back callers who hang up; answers calls and texts 24/7 | $29/mo add-on for Jobber users | Jobber |
| My AI Front Desk | AI answers calls and handles two-way texts | $99/mo (400 texts included) | My AI Front Desk |
| Upfirst | AI answers the call itself and texts you a summary | From $24.95/mo (30 calls) | Upfirst |
| Podium | Messaging platform with an AI add-on | Quote only | Podium |
An AI receptionist that answers every call removes most missed calls in the first place; text back covers the rest (hang-ups, calls during outages).
Set it up properly
- Register for A2P 10DLC. US carriers require business SMS senders to register their brand and use case. Unregistered texts may be filtered or blocked; GoHighLevel’s own docs flag this (GoHighLevel help).
- Use your main number (or a textable version of it), so the text comes from the number they just called.
- Write it like a person. Name the business, apologise, ask one question.
- Answer fast. The point is speed; route replies to a phone that someone watches, or to an AI that can book.
- Don’t add promotions. A reply to a caller is one thing; marketing texts need prior express written consent under the TCPA (Morrison Foerster). Not legal advice.
Is it worth it?
Put your own numbers in our missed-call cost calculator: missed calls a week, the share that would have booked, and your average job value. For most service businesses, one recovered job a month covers the tool.
