AI Voice Agents: What They Are, What They Cost (2026)
An AI voice agent is software that answers or makes phone calls in a natural voice: it understands the caller, answers from your information, books appointments and hands off to a person. Ready-made AI receptionists cost about $25–300 a month; build-your-own platforms like Retell and Vapi cost roughly $0.08–0.15 a minute all-in. Start with inbound calls you're already missing.

Every call you don’t answer is a customer who may ring the next business on the list. AI voice agents now pick up those calls, and adoption is moving fast: monthly US searches for the term went from about 1,900 in mid-2025 to about 49,500 in July 2026 (DataForSEO), and the companies building them raised big rounds in 2026 (Vapi a $50M Series B, Bland a $50M Series C).
This page gives you what a voice agent does, what it really costs per month and per minute, the calling rules, and the simplest way to start: answering the inbound calls you’re already missing.
What a voice agent does
| Job | Example |
|---|---|
| Answer and route | Picks up every call, answers hours, prices and directions, transfers urgent calls |
| Book | Checks your calendar or field software and books the appointment |
| Qualify | Asks your questions (job type, location, budget) and sends you a summary |
| Follow up | Texts back missed callers, confirms appointments |
| Outbound (with consent) | Reminders, reactivation, follow-ups |
Under the hood it’s three parts: speech-to-text, a language model that decides the reply, and text-to-speech. Ready-made products bundle these; developer platforms let you pick each one.
Ready-made vs build-your-own

| Pricing | Flat monthly or per call | Per minute, by component |
| Best for | A business owner | Agencies and developers building for clients |
What it costs
From each vendor’s pricing page, 17 October 2026:
| Product | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Upfirst Starter | $24.95/mo | 30 answered calls; $1.50 per extra call; spam and silent calls not billed |
| Upfirst Pro | $159.95/mo | 300 calls; $0.75 per extra call |

| GoHighLevel AI Employee | $50/mo (100 AI minutes) or $97/mo (unlimited, fair use) per location | On top of a GoHighLevel plan from $97/mo, plus phone charges |
| Retell AI | Per minute: $0.055 platform + voice from $0.015 + model + $0.015 phone | $10 free credit; per-second billing |
| Vapi | $0.05/min platform fee + speech, model and voice at cost | Vapi estimates $82–129 per 1,000 minutes all-in |
For comparison, a human virtual receptionist from Ruby starts at $250 a month for 50 minutes (Ruby).
The Retell figure is our sum of its listed components, not a vendor quote; your bill depends on the voice and model you choose. Developer platforms also bill phone numbers separately (Retell: $2 a month per number).
The rules
- Recording: about a dozen US states require every party’s consent to record a call. Announce recording in the greeting (state list).
- Outbound calls: AI voices are “artificial voices” under the TCPA (FCC, February 2024), so outbound AI calls need prior express consent (Hunton).
- Texts: marketing texts need prior express written consent. Business SMS in the US also needs A2P 10DLC registration, or messages may be blocked.
- Health data: dental and medical practices need a signed HIPAA business associate agreement with the vendor. Some vendors only offer one on top tiers (Upfirst: Custom plan; Vapi: a $2,000-a-month add-on).
This is general information, not legal advice.
Set one up in five steps
- Pick the calls. Start with after-hours and overflow, where you’re losing callers today.
- Write the script. Your top questions and answers, what counts as urgent, and who gets transferred.
- Connect the calendar (or Jobber, Housecall Pro, Clio, your practice software).
- Forward calls you don’t answer within a few rings, and turn on missed-call text back.
- Review transcripts weekly for the first month and fix wrong answers.
Where voice agents fall short
- Unusual or emotional calls still need a person, so make “speak to someone” work every time.
- They can sound confident and be wrong: keep answers to facts you’ve given them.
- Per-minute costs climb with long calls; set time limits on developer platforms.

Questions people ask
What is an AI voice agent?
Software that holds phone conversations: it turns speech into text, decides what to say with a language model, and speaks the reply with a synthetic voice. Businesses use them to answer calls, book appointments, qualify leads and route urgent calls to staff.
How much does an AI voice agent cost?
Ready-made AI receptionists run from $24.95 a month (Upfirst, 30 calls) or $99 a month (My AI Front Desk, 200 minutes). Developer platforms bill per minute: Vapi estimates $82–129 for 1,000 minutes all-in, and Retell's listed components add up to roughly $0.10–0.15 a minute with a mid-range model.
Can an AI voice agent make outbound calls?
Yes, but outbound AI calls are regulated: the FCC ruled in February 2024 that AI-generated voices count as artificial voices under the TCPA, so you need the called person's prior express consent. Start with inbound calls.
Will callers know they're talking to AI?
Many will, and it's good practice to say so up front. Modern voices sound natural, but the safest setup announces that it's an AI assistant, discloses recording, and offers a quick way to reach a person.
