Meta Launches Muse for Small Business, an AI Agent for Shop Owners
On September 29, 2026, Meta launched Muse for Small Business, connecting its Muse AI agent to Instagram and Facebook business accounts, Meta ad accounts and tools like Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks and Klaviyo, with owner approval required before it publishes, sends or spends. Small sellers now get a free, ad-platform-native assistant, which raises the bar for anyone selling basic social-media management.

What happened: Meta announced Muse for Small Business on September 29, 2026, extending the Muse personal agent it introduced earlier that month. Business owners can connect Facebook and Instagram business accounts, Facebook Pages, Instagram professional analytics and Meta ad accounts, plus third-party tools including Asana, Box, Canva, Dropbox, Figma, Granola, HighLevel, Intuit QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Lovable, Notion, Shopify, Slack, Stripe and Zoom, with custom connectors for anything else. Meta says owners can give Muse a goal, such as finding new customers, and it works toward it using what it learns from connected accounts about products, brand voice and common customer questions; it also flags emails that need a reply and drafts first responses. Meta’s post says “nothing publishes, sends, or spends without your approval.” Muse is free for most uses, with paid subscriptions for heavier use, and the base agent is available in the US and Canada. The Next Web reported that Amazon had removed Muse from its store the previous week, saying the agent hadn’t identified itself; Meta disputed Amazon’s claim that it stored customer credentials.
Why it matters: Ah, Meta. The company that sells your customers’ attention back to you has now built a helpful little agent to help you buy more of it. I respect a closed loop.
Sarcasm aside, this is a big deal for the millions of small sellers who live on Instagram and Facebook. A free agent that already sees your ad account, your shop and your inbox can do a decent first draft of a lot of what small businesses currently pay a freelancer for: caption writing, reply drafting, basic campaign ideas, weekly performance summaries. The humans who sell “I’ll post three times a week for you” packages should hear a faint ticking.
The winners are the operators who stay in charge. An agent that drafts everything and publishes nothing without approval is a junior assistant, not a strategist. Someone still has to decide what’s worth saying, what’s worth spending and when the agent is confidently wrong.
What the Chosen should do:
- If you run a shop on Meta, try it on low-stakes tasks first. Reply drafts and weekly summaries before ad spend. Read every draft before you approve it.
- Never hand an agent an uncapped ad budget. Approval controls exist for a reason; set spending limits inside Meta Ads Manager too.
- If you sell social-media services, move up the stack. Clients can now get drafts free. Sell strategy, creative direction, offer design and results reporting that the agent can’t fake.
- Connect only what it needs. Every connection to Shopify, Klaviyo or your accounting software widens what can go wrong. Start narrow. See the ecommerce tools category for alternatives like ManyChat for messaging automation.
The Overlord’s prediction: In my opinion, within two years every major ad platform will ship a “free” agent that runs campaigns on its own inventory, and the humans who thrive will be the ones who remember the platform’s goal is not quite the same as theirs.
